So I managed to make it thru a full playthrough this time, and my opinions have significantly shifted. I'll discuss my personal pros and cons of the remake specifically, as I feel no need to discuss the actual game itself since my thoughts don't differ from my review of the original game. Pros: Actually manages to maintain many of the wacky expressions despite generally being more on model. Health Blocks are huge, such a nice QoL. Same goes for the minimap. Certain Bros Attacks are made faster or more impactful, such as fire bros which was a slog to use in the original, or swing bros advance, which had me questioning why this dealt any damage at all on the original. Maintains the feature to jump with both bros using the X button from paper jam, which can also be used to alleviate a new detriment from this version which will be discussed later. Speeding up cutscenes. Saving anywhere. Demo and Practice of Bros Attacks. Bosses enter a "rage" mode to indicate you are close to beating them. Luigi comes up with all of his own advance moves, contrary to how Mario comes up with them in the original (this one is small but I think it's neat) Dr Toadley shows up in toad town (again, small but neat) Cackletta's soul being 3d really adds to the in-human nature of it, and the colored arms are a good way to let the player know that they are weak to the respective elements (something I didn't actually know until playing this version) Nerfing the Mush Badge. While it's really funny to shred everything in the original, this change is probably for the best. Cons: Music is worse, just unable to capture the feel of the original, ended up having to patch the original music in because it was so disappointing. Game is overall much more desaturated and focuses more on darker colors with lighting, when I much prefer the brighter aesthetic of everything in the original. Some Bros Attacks are made much slower or less impactful, such as chopper bros or knockback bros advance. Removal of the leader switching, this baffling decision leads to there being far too many overworld commands to switch to (10!!!) whereas the original game halved this amount by having you use either regular jump, special jumps, hammers or hands, and then having the bro behind use it to access the abilities. This cuts inputs down to 4 or 5 if you count the switching of the leader. It feels like they wanted the player to use the touch screen, but it's a pain to switch between it and the minimap, so I would rather just switch. This is where I mentioned using the X button to jump is useful, as it means you don't have to switch back to the jump from an ability everytime. Homogenization of enemy designs. While I get they would want to make the main cast more on model, I cannot excuse the cool takes on designs of mushroom kingdom classic enemies being replaced with the boring originals. The difference between the troopea is definitely the worst example I can think of this, but there are plenty. Removal of infinite bros attacks, I don't even think these were that broken if you weren't using the mush badge (which has been nerfed here anyways) since they deal negligible damage after a point, all this does is make these attacks less fun to use. Renaming the advance moves to super moves. (nitpicky, but sometimes it feels like the games is trying to scrub the fact it used to be GBA game sometimes, instead of embracing its legacy) I would also rather put my hand in a vice then play through all of Bowser's Minions. Overall, I feel really mixed on this remake, and I don't really know if I'll play it over the original in the future, it has a lot of QoL improvements, but some of these cons are really hard for me to get over.

dropped this one, it's a fine remake but it's a far cry from the wacky visuals and fun to input bros attacks from the original, it's a fine remake, just probably not for me.
