Ah Final Fantasy II. Only one other game in the fandom is as divisive within the fanbase as it. GAMEPLAY -------------- Gameplay is what hurts this review the most for me. The way that EXP is earned isnt shown in a total level for a character, but rather every character has individual levels within specific weapon types and magic. Stats are gained through combat (Using Magic attacks often will raise your INT and MP Pool, where as phsyical attacks raise strength, and taking damage raises your HP), and varies based on the difficulty of the enemies your grinding against. This means that the system can be EASILY broken right from the start with a little mindless grinding, leaving you to absolutely demolish the entirety of the game with characters having max stats from the get go. Also due to the lack of a cohesive leveling system, there's not much for character averaging, so whenever you get a new character, you'll need to attempt level them, without relying too heavily on your already Overpowered heavy hitters. Lack of class definition and anyone being able to learn literally EVERYTHING in the game can be confusing for new players, and may even lead to forgetting who has access to what spells and such, which can lead to an awful time. VISUALS ----------- The game's pretty. The enemy designs were absolutely interesting, with a plethora of new designs for Undead that I havent seen used in any other game (The floating brains in Leviathan for one). The ocassional Airship flying over while walking the worldmap is also a nice touch, breathing life into a world that otherwise might feel kinda dead. STORY --------- Considering this is a Port/Remake of a NES Game, the story IS overly simple, but has one of the coolest boss plot twists I've seen in quite some time. If you decide to look into the extended lore of the game (Told through the manga), you realize it only takes Mateus (Emperor Palamecia/Palmekia) a week to do what he does in the events leading up to Pandemonium, is rather impressive and speaks to his strength as a Main Antag in a game series loaded with memorable main antagonists. SOUNDTRACK -------------------- No matter where you go, there's always this overarching feeling of how bleak things actually are in the game's world. The Emporer has succeeded for the most part, and you're simply trying to rebel against an army made up of the Undead/Mind Controlled, and there's always a feeling of helplessness. Once you hit Castle Pandaemonium though, the theme that blasts screams of Hope amongst the despair, leading to probably one of the most memorable final dungeons in the game. All in all, if you're interested in playing Final Fantasy as a series, I do have to recommend avoiding 2 until you're a bit more familiar with the series conventions (finding information on where to go, understanding what types of enemies are weak to which spells and so on), or at least use a Walk through if you wanna try to play it.

great story but way too frequent enemy encounters, cleared without ethers and got all chests except paul's stash because I cleared cyclone before visiting him. BEGGING the final fantasy team to create more than 1 battle theme because listening to that for 4 hours gets grating although I guess they expected players to play the game in 1 hour chunks back then. 17h1m

If you know me, you know I love FF. This is the second one. Its story is not as in depth as later titles and is just a good classic JRPG. They did a good job on these pixel remasters. It gets a lower score than others because the systems for leveling in it are just frustrating.

The sequel to Final Fantasy is also the first in the series to kill characters unceremoniously and, honestly, hilariously.

Not as bad as people make it out to be, this title decided to try something new with the leveling system making it something akin to Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Where the leveling system is based on how you use your characters, which I find quite charming. Once again great pixels and amazing remix.
