Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory is a rhythm action game developed and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It is the fourteenth installment in the Kingdom Hearts series. The game features over 140 songs from the series and the ability to play as over 20 characters. Additionally, Kairi's story is continued from the end of the Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind downloadable content. Hints at the next Kingdom Hearts game came in January 2020 from series creator Tetsuya Nomura, with the game being revealed in June 2020. Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory will be released worldwide in 2020. Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory is a rhythm action game featuring over 140 songs from the series and its Disney worlds. The game features both single and multiplayer gameplay, with four different game modes, including online battles. The gameplay of Melody of Memory has been compared to Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. Traversal between each of the worlds is done through the Gummi Ship, a system used in previous mainline Kingdom Hearts games.

Achievement/trophy wise, the list isn’t too horrible. The grindiest achievement is defeat 100,000 enemies (best song to repeat is “Wave of Darkness I” from KH0.2) The hardest achievement is reaching Platinum 1 In battle mode OR defeating 20 COMs in battle mode. Defeating 20 COMs is easy if you lose in low ranks multiple times before reaching Plat 1. (You cannot derank in battle mode against the AI) Full Chain 50 songs on Proud mode isn’t bad since you can get Full Chains on standard mode and One Button mode to make this super easy. (Standard and One Button mode count as a separate list of songs)

If any of y'all are curious on Memory of Melody -- get it at your own risk @A@ While it's a fun game -- it's a rhythm game, of course it'll be fun -- it has a prominent difficulty curve given it prioritises combat timed at specific moments, and especially for heavily syncopated songs (Hand in Hand) or songs with odd or frequently changing time signatures (Night of Fate, Vector to the Heavens) you have to know those songs like the back of your hand to stand a chance. While that may sound standard, especially regarding higher difficulties, at the same time I doubt the average person needs to feel like they needed to pass basic music theory classes to grasp some of the levels and their mapping, and that's coming from a freelance composer, actor, and singer. Hi-Fi Rush and Crypt of the NecroDancer have better layouts because they are a combat games that happen to have rhythm game elements. Project Diva, Taiko no Tatsujin, and Rhythm Heaven have better layouts because they are rhythm games in some of their purest forms. A precious rhythm game Square Enix made and ripped assets from for this game, Final Fantasy Theatrhythm, was a beautiful example of a rhythm game with combat elements. Kingdom Hearts: Memory of Melody is barely influenced by Theatrhythm and chooses an actively moving combat section AND background, which is the very antithesis of a music-centric game that leans more on the rhythm. Newbies and onlookers of, say, the Project Diva series, complain that music videos often have too much in the background, can induce nausea, and can make discerning what buttons you need to input difficult, but due to said buttons' cues being stagnant in contrast to a moving background it is not as nauseating for player, who tend to focus on the patterns within the cues, thus decreasing nausea. This cannot be said for KH: MoM's formatting, which has moving button cues as well as moving backgrounds, and the cues move not only towards the player and the area that is considered where it is best to hit them for scores but the cues also move side to side, curved on a path which stretches and scrunches how close and far the cues are. I can't play the game more than an hour in one setting if I'm lucky due to the level formatting because it induces such a strangely simultaneously prominent and subtle nausea that I struggled with dissociating mid-game. Is this meant to be like a slow roller coaster like It's a Small World from Disneyland? Why add that aspect into a game; it's just overstimulating! It's amazing to see the world from Kairi's perspective, especially when she is retelling stories that aren't hers to tell (*COUGHCOUGHROXASVENTUSXIONANDMORECOUGHCOUGH*), but did we really need a whole rhythm game with her narrating less-than-a-minute long cutscenes to contextualise her feelings and intentions in the latter parts of the series, namely KH2 and KH3? Did we really need the "plot" to be played in its entirety with 100+ songs as a necessity before you can play the songs on your own time? Are we really locking choice behind a checklist? Sweetheart, Square Enix, Disney, this is not how things should be done unless you really have a fun, engaging, potentially competitive way to contextualise it, and this ain't it! If you want a challenge to your rhythm games, this might be good for you -- but you'll likely need 9+ hours of grinding through the "story mode" given it has the soundtracks for most of the series before you can begin to have a sense of freedom akin to Project Diva if that was what you've been anticipating, and you'll also need to be prepared for nauseating level layouts. This is by far the worst game in the KH series next to Re: Coded; there's little reason for it to be here in its current state. It's level design should have been changed far earlier in development, and that's the biggest thing that kills this game.

Fun rhythm game that summarizes the events of the series through Kairi's POV. Wish there was no relevant story included and that it was just saved for Kingdom Hearts IV though. I platinumed it though, and still wanna play it during my free time.

Love this rhythm game, the platinum might be challenging if you aren't that good with rhythm games but it is doable to obtain.

A wonderful music game, beautiful tracks and gameplay, and the story is beautiful. Plus, it gives a huge insight into the next game in the series (KH4), which I'm looking forward to even more!
