The Sinking City is a game of investigation genre taking place in a fictional open world inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. The player incarnates a private investigator in 1920s, who finds himself in a city of New England, Oakmont Massachusetts. It's currently suffering from extensive waterflood, and its cause is clearly supernatural.

The Sinking City, an open world detective adventure game. Kinda like L.A. Noire but with H.P. Lovecraft vibe. It was my first time playing a Lovecraftian horror game. The story and environment was somewhat appealing but there were parts that I didn't like. The game follows Charles Reed who investigates the city of Oakmont, such as mysterious floods, conspiracy, cults, and uncover the truth behind the madness. I found the story interesting since I took the time to enjoy into the details like reading documents and listening to NPCs. Still, I wasn't totally satisfied with the ending cutscene because it's only like 15 seconds I guess, meh-. The game has dark themes e.g. racial injustice. One is when I found a document about Hobo signs and mentioning a cross and three K's. I thought Ku Klux Klan and guess what? It is Ku Klux Klan, it'll appear in part of main case. This was my second time found KKK in a game after RDR 2. Detective part is what I mostly like. Clues and deductions. You'll find a clue by exploring the crime scene or digging into archives. City hall, police station, hospital, and local newspaper are places you will mostly visit when searching for clues. The phone booth for fast travel is a timesaver. Combine clues that fit in Mind Palace to come to conclusions on what decisions to make in your case but it's more of a template tho. So, once it comes to the decision, it’s still yours to make. But honestly, it's doesn't affect to the main story that much. See the unseen reenactment of events and sequence them in order to get the evidence by using the Mind's eye. Mind's eye also helps reveal hidden tracks or clues that are otherwise invisible. Whenever the screen distorts with a ringing sound, it's a clue to the case. You can enter a building if you see a crooked H sign. But after a while, you notice they reused certain building layouts. Same goes for certain NPCs (has similar face but with different face parts / outfit). If you see a grid marking sign, it contains supplies. The game has limited resources so it feels useless when you solved a case, you get some materials but the other materials appear as "can't carry more, sorry :)" The game jumpscared me a lot with the monsters spawned near me whenever I entered an infested building or infested area marked with V-shaped and M symbols. There are 4 monsters, and the Acheronians are the worst. Stygians bothers me much. My advice to kill stygians with melee 'cause they are the easiest one with melee attack. Combat is pretty straightforward – just bang! bang! bang!, and the monsters die. Animations and facial expressions are kinda bland, and while the environment is eerie, the city feels kinda dead.

The atmosphere in The Sinking City catches you everytime you boot up the game, it helps a lot with getting into the mood for some lovecraftian monster killing. While the investigative gameplay can be kinda simple and repetitive, the revelations that some quests provide can be quite disturbing. The deeper you venture, the uneasier you feel. there's times when you don't know who the bad guy is, because not quest is truly black and white. There is a lot of nuance in the characters' motivations, which makes this game that much more interesting.
