Overall Score : 8.5/10 Steam Deck
I wanted to play this game for a long time, since I heard so many things about it and how the remake butchered it. Well the truth is kinda in the middle. The game is great ,but it's a little bit overrated or even not remembered well enough. Also I recommend playing this one on hard if you want a more survival horror experience,I heard that the other difficulty is way too easy.
The gameplay is classic og style survival horror which I love . Raccoon city is more fleshed out compared to the remake which is a very strong point of this game. Nemesis is also much better cause he remains humanoid for the most of the game and appears pretty often. Now regarding og Nemesis though ,unlike what some people were saying he is scripted indeed and it was almost clear as day when he would appear especially with the music changing and all,but still he was much better than Remake's. I have 2 major complaints on this game, the first one is the grave digger ,whenever this worm appears the game's quality is always dropping. Aside from its 2 boring n insignificant appearances there is a space after the actual fight where there are multiple zombies and Jill seems to be unable to aim at them even when they are infront of her, which was extremely frustrating cause I died a couple of times because of this and had to do the boring boss again n again. My second complaint is the dodge, honestly even though I was able to do it pretty often , it's unreliable and there were times when nemesis hit me even though I performed the dodge. The areas are cool ,well after Raccoon city they are pretty bare bones ,but they were serviceable, clock tower was nice. The puzzles were pretty decent ,the water puzzle was pretty good. The bossfights aside from the grave digger were good ,the first mandatory nemesis fight being the best. The choice system is nice ,but much less significant than people make it to be. Mercenaries is a nice addition and I like the way it works ,but it's probably one of the weakest mercenaries in the series, which makes sense as it was the first one as well. I love the way the game looks and the atmosphere is decent. Last ,but not least I'd say that the game isn't scary, Nemesis running at me was tense in the RPD and maybe the clocktower ,but aside from them nothing scary.
The story is much less fleshed out and pretty okayish ,the remake did such a better job at it. Same applies to the characters ,they were almost non existent on this one, while they were great on the remake.
All in all, Resident Evil 3 Nemesis is a great game ,but hot take here ,I would call the Remake a better game as it features better combat, horror and story. Would the remake be a much much better game if it was more faithful? Yes totally because this game does right what remake does wrong and remake does right what the og does wrong. I recommend this game ,it may looks like I'm hating it ,but no it's a great game and deserves love, just a more fair one.
