Really incredibly executed story that blended real life elements with the gameplay well. Playing as both Alan and Saga kept the gameplay fresh as they both employed different mechanics to move the story forward. My only gripe was the ending, I feel it fell kind of flat for how much the story was building up to it.

Back to the beginning. I’ve been trying to write a review for Alan Wake 2, the video game. I don’t know how much time has passed. Still, I can’t bring myself to put out the words on the page. I think I’m trapped in my own thoughts, is this the dark place? What’s so different about this game? Is this a game? Or is it a musical? I hear lots of music, original compositions playing all the time, there’s even a musical about us. Is this real? What’s real? There’s a lot of fmv scenes with real actors, they seem real, Is this a movie? Or a streaming series? But you control the main character, you move around in a 3d space, is this really a game? I also shoot, I need to be safe, I need to survive, is this a survival horror game? But right now, I’m just exploring and collecting clues, talking with other people, did I ever shoot anything? Is this a detective game? What is happening now, there’s and old lady looking at me who reminds me of… WHAT IS GOING ON? Why did she do that, THIS IS HORROR. Why are we playing different characters now? Why has everything changed? Is this a new inventory, a new menu that has completely changed my things on screen? How many games are here? Is this…? This cannot be possible!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I00GkC8feDU I’m just starting to write this review and I think it is safe to say that Alan Wake 2 is “genre defying “and a game defying experience in a good sense. If you want to “catalogue” and unify its content, you could probably just say “it is a scary game” and be done with it… but that would be wrong! Alan Wake 2 its successfully ambitious, it just wants to try many different things that would normally be half done in other games, or just not done at all, but here they are fully realized, all the way, every time. The game is structured in chapters. Each chapter of the main story, has an ending song. Unlike the previous game, most of these songs are original compositions created by different local music bands specially for the game. The songs were based on the writing of Sam Lake, the creative director of the game. They do more than just set the mood; their lyrics relate to the story of the game. And this is just an example of how far Remedy went into crafting the different parts of Alan Wake 2. Being a sequel to a 13-year-old game, there would be plenty of people who wouldn’t know a thing about the story of the first one. This could mean, having a five-minute prologue video explaining what happened before. Or perhaps in a more interesting way, the writers would create a new character for the game, let’s call her Saga, and FBI agent who comes to Brightfalls to investigate a strange event, near Cauldron Lake, a murder. This new character would serve as an introduction to the story, since she doesn’t know what happened before, in 2010, and then at some point in the story you would finally play with the main character of the first game, Alan Wake, perhaps near the end, but just enough to feel like a proper sequel to the players who played the first game… But for Remedy, this was not enough. They just created a fully realized experience playing as Alan Wake. Almost two different games. Each one with different levels, different powers, different collectibles, different game genres, and in that sense a very different way of playing each one. And yet, they are intimately related, as you will find out while you’re playing them. And this is to support the story that is being told. Saga Anderson is an FBI agent investigating a murder near Bright Falls, the same place where a strange event happened 13 years ago,… Alan Wake was a writer who disappeared around that time, near cauldron lake, but in fact he has been lost into the dark place, a different plane of existence with rules that don’t apply to reality. The gameplay all across this game has been vastly improved from Alan Wake 1. The combat feels much more responsive and tactile and not as repetitive as the first game, where there was more action. Your character doesn’t feel like a tank anymore, and different weapons have different responses, as mentioned before you can take different approaches from time to time, that don’t rely so much on fighting, that adding to entire segments of the game where no combat is involved. That being said, at certain points in the game, while exploring, doing collectibles hunting, you will have respawns of random enemies from time to time, many times, which frankly could’ve been toned down. The game is interesting enough to just do exploring only and clues/collectibles hunting for long amounts of time (and at times it does, just exploring!) but somehow there are some segments where it seems as if the game creators lost some confidence and respawned some enemies just for the sake of it. Luckily, the game is not always like that, (this is from playing on normal difficulty) and even then you have many combat difficulty options to just make that part of the game as light as possible. In that sense, the different accessibility options that this game has go a long way in making this experience as approachable and available to as many people as possible, these options adjust not only the difficulty, but also how much physical strain is required from the player, as well as audio adjustments for sensible hearing, and also visual and audio adjustments for the scary effects on the game, or just visual cues to acute for different personal conditions on each player. The game really tries to adapt as much as possible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJc7n7eabT0 Going back to the story elements, of having different narratives coexisting simultaneously, at one point the game just lets you go wild free, and lets you choose in which order to play, switching as you go. And since both contents are all parts of the same story, you will be piecing together all the clues at different moments, depending on how you play the chapters.
