I recently played Tekken, and it offers a nostalgic experience reminiscent of the 1990s. As the original 3D fighting game released in 1994, it demonstrates why it garnered attention at the time. However, some aspects make it less appealing in 2025. Overall, I would rate it a 3 and a half stars. The Highlights Firstly, the controls are very straightforward. Each button corresponds to a specific limb: left punch, right punch, left kick, right kick. You can easily get into the game and feel effective without much effort. For its era, the 3D gameplay was impressive and ahead of its time, surpassing many 2D fighting games like Street Fighter. The sound effects are satisfying; landing a hit produces a noticeable thwack, adding to the sense of impact. The eight-character roster is diverse and full of personality. Kazuya represents karate, Nina is a swift assassin, and Yoshimitsu is an unusual robot ninja wielding a sword. Trying different characters adds variety, each with a distinct style. Visually, the graphics were top-notch for 1994, with smooth animations and decent 3D models. Although they appear blocky now, they were visually impressive at the time. The Limitations That said, some aspects are less refined. The simple controls can quickly feel limiting, especially when compared to later entries in the series that feature complex combos and juggles. While eight characters might seem enough, some are noticeably stronger, making character choice impactful—if your opponent picks King and relies on grab moves, it can be challenging. The AI can be quite frustrating. On higher difficulty levels, it often anticipates your moves and counters effectively, making it feel like fighting a psychic opponent. This can be disheartening if you're aiming to practice or enjoy casual matches. Content-wise, the game offers arcade mode to fight against the roster and a versus mode for two players. There are no additional modes or practice features, which limits replay value once you've completed it a few times. The story is minimal, primarily involving a tournament and Kazuya’s conflict with his father, Heihachi. It's presented through brief cutscenes at the end of the arcade mode. Final Thoughts Tekken remains an enjoyable experience for fans of retro games. Its simplicity, nostalgic value, and significance in fighting game history are noteworthy. However, due to its outdated graphics, limited gameplay depth, and challenging AI, it doesn't hold the same appeal for modern players. I give it 3 and a half stars—a solid introduction to the series that is fun for a quick throwback but might not sustain long-term interest.
