I'd forgotten I'd signed up to be notified when Diablo Immortal came out. I was reminded this morning with a push notification from Google Play. If I still had my underpowered Moto X4, I'd have probably just gone, "ah, that's nice" and dismissed it without bothering to investigate. But since I've got a shiny new (ish, ~3months) Pixel 5a, I actually had the space for it. So, after rolling up another incarnation of Badaxe the Barbarian, here are my first impressions:
* While it loads a hell of a lot faster than, say, Diablo III on PC, it's still takes just a bit too long to load to make it a viable bathroom break game.
* I have no idea if the voice acting on the cutscenes is any good, since I generally have my phone's volume all the way down except for notifications and music.
* There's actually character customization this time around. If only I could see them on my 6"x3" screen.
* The other hallmark of a good bathroom break game is the ability to put it down at any point. That, it has. Checkpoints through the first zone are pretty frequent.
* I generally don't like simulated thumbsticks. That aside, the controls are fine. At some point I should try pairing a Bluetooth controller with my phone to see how well that works.
* After a couple sessions of no more than 10 minutes each, I'm already Lv.6. No fancy loot yet.
