Some Spoilers for the first half, Major spoilers for the second half
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
I really liked the game, even if it has its problems, its still an amazing experience. Lets begin with the bad part >:( It has only three areas, where you revisit them for annoying fetch quests, the controls can be very bad sometimes (especially with motion controls and on the wii), its repetitive... and the imprisoned... ooooh the imprisoned...
For those uneducated in skyward sword, the imprisoned is a boss that, on the surface seems fine, he climbs the sealed grounds, and you gotta stop him by hitting his toes (???) and then pushing a seal back inside of him. Do that three times and he is sealed again. But the problem isnt this, no no... the problem is that you fight him a minimum of 3 times with minimal changes every time. If you want 100% however, you need to fight him a minimal of 5 times, since you refight him in a boss rush (the two first fights). But thats not the worst part of the game, not by a long shot, the ABSOLUTE most downright HORRID section in ANY zelda game i've ever played, is the FREAKING UNDERWATER NOTE COLLECTING on the third visit to faron woods. Its slow, tedious, the underwater controls are the worst and its a big waste of time. Talking about wastes of time, the sky is a very important part to the game, yet i cant but feel tired, needing to go back and forth between islands, with the boost rock things being few and far between. The most clear example of this is on the third act of the game, where you need to go to the isle of songs thrice (i love using thrice in a sentence) and seeing the same cutscene, with the only change being the song.
Now i have to say, basically everything else is great. Lets start from the best part gameplay wise, the Dungeons. We start with the skyview temple and the earth temple, wich are very basic and really only have one stand out point (wich isnt even that good), but the next dungeon is heaps better, the Lanayru Mining Facility uses time shift stones, wich make an area around them go into the far past, where the place was thriving, and the machinery works. This concept is really unique and its expanded even further in The Sandship, my personal favorite dungeon for this game. The Ancient Cistern, Fire Sanctuary and the Sky Keep, are all great, with unique mechanics (especially the Sky Keep) and some great bosses. Talking about those, the bosses in this game are hit or miss, in one hand you have Koloktos, Lord Ghirahim and the almighty Demise, the source of all evil and the main antagonist of the game (we'll get there), but in the other hand you have Scoldera, a rock that has lava legs, very original i know, and Bilocyte who stands there and shoots snot balls for you to deflect back towards them. But i think the high points are more entertaining than the low points take away from the experience. The items are some of the best in any zelda game. There's the Beetle that you use to fly around freely for a limited time, and even grab items like bombs with an upgrade, theres the Gust Bellows that is basically a vacuum cleaner but its fun to use. Of course we still have classics like the Slingshot, Bow, Bombs, and the best item ever, the Double Clawshots, straight from Twilight Princess! The pouch mechanic is also very innovative for the series, allowing you to have a total of 8 items at a time, ranging from Bottles to medals that increase health or chance to get rupees, and of course the Shield. The upgrade mechanic is also really great, you can find materials in the overworld, inside chets and dropped by enemies, those are used to upgrade items and pouch items. You can upgrade the beetle to make it faster (DO IT, IT MAKES THE GAME WAY MORE BEARABLE), upgrade the Bug Net to make it bigger, and the shields to make them more resistant to enemy attacks. The shields work basically like this: Each shield has a durability bar, the more it blocks attacks, the lower it gets, but if you parry just in time, you dont use durabilty and also stagger the enemy. They also have an elemental mechanic, theres the Wood shield, resistant to shock, but weak to fire, the Iron shield, resistant to fire but weak to shock, the Sacred Shield, resistant to all and also regenerates, but has low durability, and the classic Hylian Shield, that ins unbreakable and resists all elemental attacks.
The art style is beautiful, it really looks like a painting, just look at faron woods! And the Soundtrack... ooooh man the soundtrack is A M A Z I N G! Its the first game in the seires to have an orchestrated composition, and its absolutely beautiful. Ballad of The Goddes is my favorite song from this game, and the fact that the main melody is Zelda's Lullaby in reverse is so cool.
phew... thats a lot right? NOPE, LETS TALK ABOUT THE LOREEEEEEE
MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD
The story of the game is its strongest point, it starts showing skyloft and its residents but most importantly, the relationship between Link and Zelda. They are two best friends who knew each other for their whole lives, yet there's a certain romance in the air, and it makes it so much more tragic when zelda goes missing. Link is at his lowest point here, he lost his most loved one, but the hope isnt over just yet. The whole adventure is the search for zelda, or thats what Link cares about. Fi, even tough annoying at times, is one of my favorite characters of the whole series, and the farewell scene legitimately made me cry. The fact that Fi is still inside the Master Sword makes me even more excited for Tears of The Kingdom becuse she migh just make an appearance. Ghirahim is the exact opposite to Link, he is very egocentric, ignorant, gets mad when things dont go exactly his way, and made some people realize they migh not be straight. Demise is straight up evil, his lore is very obscure, but what we see is someone who only feels hatred towards the Godesses and their creations, and the final scene with him, where he curses the spirit of the hero and the blood of the royal family is really deep, it gives a reason for there to be so many zeldas, links and ganons. But none of what i've mentioned so far comes even close to the best thing in the game, its Groose. His design, character arc and theme song- its all beautiful.
This game surprised me, i went in thinking i'd hate it, but in the end i ended up enjoying it more than a lot of games i've played. The Zelda series never fail to desapoint me, even in its low points
For that, i give The Legend of Groose- Zelda, Skyward Sword (HD), a 9/10
Thank you, Nintendo, the zelda comunity, and you, for reading my humble review.
